‘Zero awareness’: Dees’ ‘terrible’ moment sums up ‘un-Melbourne’ form slump
A simple passage of play has summed up Melbourne’s woes over the past month, involving premiership stars Bayley Fritsch and Christian Petracca.
Early in the first quarter against Brisbane on Thursday night at the MCG, with the Lions looking ominous, Melbourne looked all but certain to kick its first goal of the game.
Fritsch crumbed a marking contest in the forward 50 for the Dees early, leaving open space between he and the goals.

Petracca streamed past Fritsch and was near the goalsquare, but Fritsch opted to try and kick the goal himself instead.
He was chased down by a desperate Jack Payne and penalised for dropping the ball.
It left Petracca understandably frustrated and the Dees were lucky Joe Daniher missed a set shot at the other end to make matters worse.
Melbourne’s missed opportunity typified a sluggish start from the side, which continued to look out of whack after what was initially an all-conquering start to the season.
