Cricket Australia has announced the introduction of a draft for this summer’s Big Bash League, allowing clubs to recruit up to three primary overseas players.

Nominations opened worldwide on Wednesday and CA says that the draft will take place in the coming months.

The draft is designed to entice more overseas talent to Australian shores with CA promising “globally competitive rates” for those who nominate.

BBL player acquisition consultant Trent Woodhill said in a statement: “The KFC BBL has a long history of bringing the biggest names to Australia and we expect it to be an even more attractive proposition with the introduction of the draft.

“The Draft will create a new layer of strategic decision making for players and clubs alike, as well as new levels of anticipation for the upcoming season.

“Feedback from players and agents around the world to the Draft concept has been very positive. They know what a great experience a summer in Australia is and we are anticipating a strong group of nominations in the near future.”

Players will nominate themselves online for either part or the entire tournament.

They can nominate for three salary categories: Gold, Silver and Bronze.

The BBL will then elevate the biggest names to Platinum status.

Clubs will pick players in an order decided via a weighted lottery.

Those who missed last season’s finals — Melbourne Stars, Brisbane Heat and Melbourne Renegades — go in a lottery for picks one, two and three.

The weighted lottery means last-placed Renegades are three times as likely to draw pick No.1 than the sixth-placed Stars, and twice as likely as seventh-placed Brisbane.

The remaining five franchises go in a second weighted lottery to determine picks four to eight.

The draft will have four rounds:

- Round 1: Platinum only

- Round 2: Platinum or Gold

- Round 3: Gold or Silver

- Round 4: Silver or Bronze

Round one follows the same pick order as drawn, before rounds two to four follow a snaking order.

Clubs can pass picks, but must sign at least two, and at most three, players by the end of the draft.

The draft will also offer one retention pick to clubs, who can override another club’s selection and retain a player if they played for the them in the previous season.

Clubs can still contract up to four or five replacement overseas players in addition to the two or three picked in the draft (up to a total of seven internationals in total).

However, the replacement player must have also nominated for the draft, unless approved by CA.
