Cristiano Ronaldo could be thrust into Manchester United’s starting lineup despite his severe lack of pre-season action, while Everton face a serious crisis after their star forward copped a freak injury that is set to sideline him for six weeks.

Plus Leicester have copped a horrible injury blow after announcing right-back Ricardo Pereira will be out of action for up to six month following Achilles surgery, having suffered the injury in their final pre-season match.

Coach Brendan Rodgers said: “Sadly Ricardo Pereira will be out for up to six months with a ruptured Achilles. A lot of our game idea was about our full-backs and him in particular. He was looking so good.

“It’s a massive blow to him.”

The team will also be without Harvey Barnes and Ryan Bertrand (both knee injuries), and have also sold keeper Kasper Schmeichel to Nice - all the while having not signed a single player this transfer window.

And Liverpool are also up against a dark injury cloud.

Centre-back Ibrahima Konate will be out “for a while”, Jurgen Klopp said, after suffering a knee injury in last week’s final touch-up game. Liverpool also have Kostas Tsimikas, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Diogo Jota, Curtis Jones and backup keeper Caoimhin Kelleher injured, while midfielder Naby Keita only returned to training yesterday after missing a week with illness.
