You’ll be able to hear the result of the vote in a special countdown programme, hosted by OJ Borg, which will be available on BBC Sounds and BBC Radio 2 on August Bank Holiday weekend.
Meet the Panel
The panel included Radio 2's very own OJ Borg and our regular movie critic James King, plus BBC Radio 1 movie critic Ali Plumb, and Rhianna Dhillon, the movie critic on Lauren Laverne's 6 Music Breakfast show.
It brings back the childhood innocence, that joy of belting them out on car journeys with family and friends.- OB Borg
"We've all loved watching animated films through our lives, and enjoyed the songs that have been in them. These are the songs we loved when we were kids and when we are adults, we start to get our own children into them, it's just a joy every time you hear one, you realise you know every single word! It brings back the childhood innocence, that joy of belting them out on car journeys with family and friends. But what is the greatest of all the animated movie songs from the last 50 years?"
It was also great to revisit a few I’d forgotten about.- James King
"Helping to choose this shortlist was tough but so much fun too. Some of the biggest songs of the last few years have been from animations and so many are just part of the fabric of pop culture. It was also great to revisit a few I’d forgotten about. Now it’s over to the brilliant Radio 2 listeners to choose their favourite!"
I grew up with animated movies and their songs are woven into countless happy memories I have as a child.- Rhianna Dhillon
"As with so many audiences, I grew up with animated movies and their songs are woven into countless happy memories I have as a child. There is nothing more joyful than being able to recite every single lyric to your favourite songs from those films which is why I was delighted to be a part of this process, reminiscing about the best magical, musical, movie moments! We had to make some extremely tough decisions about which songs should make the shortlist but hopefully, you will find your old favourite animated songs in the list and also discover some new ones too!"
I'm amazed how many of the lyrics just tumble out of my head as if I'd heard them yesterday!- Ali Plumb
"I might want to say that Lawrence Of Arabia, say, or Pulp Fiction, or perhaps even Citizen Kane might be the film I've watched most in my life, but let's be honest: for every single last one of us, it's either a Christmas movie or an animated film (or maybe both!). Songs in animations are heard over and over and over and over again, not just in the cinema or in front of the TV at home, but in the car, on the bus, whenever and however - there's just something about them that bonds them close to our hearts, so it was a real pleasure to be asked to think about what might be the very best catchier-than-catchy animated earworms over the past half a century. Honestly, I'm amazed how many of the lyrics just tumble out of my head as if I'd heard them yesterday!"
